New Mexico’s economy is growing…and that means legislators could have extra money to spend next year. About 300 million dollars more. New projections have the state raking in 6.2 billion dollars… More money than it’s had since 2008. State finance secretary Tom Clifford credits an improving job market and a booming oil and gas industry for the increase. The governor’s administration is recommending legislators save a big chunk of that “new” money because federal budget cuts have drained the state’s reserves. House majority leader Rick Miera tells News 13 he’d like to see the surplus spent in the classroom.
Albuquerque’s own Rebel Donuts was in the national spotlight in a donut showdown…and they won! The owners of the popular donut shop were on the Cooking Channel Wednesday… going head to head with teams from Florida and Montreal in a carnival-themed competition. The nacho, candy-apple, and lemonade donuts won the $10,000 dollar prize. They say the lemonade donuts will be in stores soon … and the candy apple donuts will be on shelves this fall.
So what do you get when you combine an angry bird, snow white, and a wizard? New special shapes at this year’s Balloon Fiesta. The wizard is just one of eleven new ones. “Snow White” will be coming all the way from the UK, and “Peg Leg Pete” — the big green parrot — from Illinois. Plus the “Hummingbird” is a brand new balloon … Just out of the box. And the ‘Scuba Diver” is coming from Brazil. Overall, there should be nearly 97 special shapes, which would make it the largest gathering of special shapes in the world! Balloon Fiesta runs October 5th through the 13th.
