2013 Southwest Shootout Poetry Slam

This past weekend was jam packed with events, but there was one that I could not miss. That is the Southwest Shootout Poetry Slam that happened on Saturday at the Kimo Theater. It brought together the best of the slam poetry scene in ABQ and the region. This competition is a qualifier for the National Poetry Slam coming up in a couple months. There was so much talent in the room, and everyone brought their own style to the table.

Part of the event was hosted by my good friend and ABQ Poet Laureate, Hakim Bellamy.

In the competition there were individual poems and group poems as seen below.

There were poems that made you laugh hysterically, and there were personal poems that made you cry. But the unifying theme was that all the poets were raw and authentic.

Congratulations to the winners of the competition, but the thing about poetry is….everyone is a winner because its all about expression!

And check out a couple highlighted events happening this weekend.

The Duke City Roller Derby girls are taking on Oklahoma City tomorrow in their season opener and it’s for a good cause. The Duke City team will be collecting donations for tornado victims that the ladies from OKC will take back home with them. The team is also holding a raffle where a portion of the proceeds go to the relief effort. The game starts at 6 pm and it’s at the Albuquerque convention center.

On Saturday, the Southwest Shootout pits a dozen of the best poetry slam teams in the Southwest against each other for a shot at glory and cash prizes. Albuquerque slam is at the Kimo Theater. The show starts at 7:30 and tickets are $15.

If your dad has a green thumb … Take him to the Albuquerque Garden Center on Sunday from noon to 4 for “Fiesta in the Garden.” The day includes gardening demonstrations, entertainment, and a flower show. Tickets are $4 for adults and $2 for kids.

My Week at the Albuquerque Film & Media Experience

Last week I got the pleasure of covering the 1st annual Albuquerque Film and Media Experience happening in Nob Hill. It was such a spectacular event filled with film makers and film lovers from all over the world, as well as a lot of local artists showcasing the talents. It was definitely one of the best events I have been to in Albuquerque. Take a look at some pictures from the week of events.

Here is a picture with Nawang Kechog, the personal musician for the Dalai Lama! He performed some of music right before the screening of “Road to Peace” an amazing documentary about the Dalai Lama.

Here I am with my partner in crime, Janae from 95.1 All the Hits. She was the host of the Taste of Film event happening at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center.

If you haven’t heard the buzz already, there is an awesome festival of food, film, and art happening right here in the Duke City this week. The Albuquerque Film and Media Experience, or AFME for short, is featuring some of today’s most thought provoking movies, serving up some of Albuquerque’s best foods, and bringing some Hollywoods biggest stars. Rock the Boat Sustainable Seafood Festival this Thursday!

This Thursday the Biopark Society is having their annual Rock the Boat Sustainable Seafood Festival as a fundraiser for the Biopark Aquarium. Many of Albuquerque’s finest restaurants will be sampling their take on sustainable seafood as well as many other vendors.
