Up Close and Personal with the Snakes at the Biopark

January 22nd, 2013 at 11:22 am by under Face of Fox

This past weekend the ABQ Biopark had a Reptile Awareness Day where they educated folks about the different reptiles at the Zoo as well as some of the Bio-medical initiatives they are part of. I got to hang out inside and see what goes on behind the scenes! I learned a lot and made an unlikely friend…

As you can see on my face, I am not the most comfortable with snakes but I was willing to check one out up close and personal. If you have a strong fear of snakes, this may freak you out…

A little nervous at first, I was slowly calmed as my guide, Zoo Herpetologist Doug Hotle, told me this Boa Constrictor is good with people and is definitely not venomous.

After awhile, the snake surprisingly became very soothing to me and it actually seemed like it liked me.

This is why I love my job…Who would of thought I would wake up for work and end up having a large snake around my neck? Not me. But surprisingly I am glad I did. I now have a new found respect and comfort with snakes that I wouldn’t have otherwise.

I would also encourage everyone to head down to the BioPark Zoo as well. You never know what you will learn and they have a lot of very knowledgeable people that are passionate about sharing that knowledge!
