Wedding Tip for Broke Brides

Your dream wedding doesn’t have to break the bank, with a little planning, careful consideration, and a few unique money-saving ideas you can create your perfect day. Here’s a quick tip from David Bridal:

Flowers are a big expense for brides. Instead of flowers, maybe choosing a bouquet of broaches that you’ve collected from your family and incorporating colors of the season such as fruit instead of flowers. If you do go with flowers, those that are in bloom will be a lot cheaper than flowers that are not.

Sunday is your last chance to ski New Mexico. Taos and Santa Fe are closing this weekend but there is still plenty of fun to be had. In Taos, don’t miss pond skimming, that’s when competitors use any means necessary to skim across an 80 foot pool of ice cold water. This annual end-of-season event is Sunday from 2:30 to 5 p.m. at the base of strawberry hill — the best costume earns extra points.

And in Santa Fe, snow bunnies can take advantage of awesome savings in the Sports Shop.  Many items are reduced 50 to 60 percent and if you show your season pass you get an additional 10 percent off.  This is a great time to stock up for next year

Saturday, the public can tour the southern New Mexico site where scientists set off the world’s first atomic bomb in 1945. The Trinity Site is normally off limits to civilians however, the military does allow visitors just two days a year, the first Saturday of April and October. The site is located at what is now White Sands Missile Range west of Alamogordo.  Visitors can enter the range through the Stallion Range Center gate. There is also a caravan leaving from the Tularosa High School football field parking lot at 8 a.m. Tours will operate from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and admission is free

Get all shook up at the Elvis Karaoke Concert tonight from 5 pm – 8 pm on the Plaza. Dress like the king for the look-a-like contest; wear 50′s-style apparel, or just to come as you are. Before the night is over, the best Elvis karaoke performer will be crowned as “The King.”

An Albuquerque artist is getting national recognition for designing a rock star’s tour poster. Jon Sanchez was recently notified that Fleetwood Mac chose his work to launch their 2013 summer tour. Jon will be a guest on New Mexico style Tuesday!

You may want to grab a jacket if you are heading to the Isotopes game for opening night. It will be partly cloudy with lows in the 40s and south winds 10 to 15 mph after midnight.

DIY Network’s John DeSilvia shares his tips to maximizing storage and creating an organized and tidy closet space

The Convention Center is undergoing a $20 million renovation and as part of the renovation the city is placing some of its older kitchen equipment up for auction. City officials said there is a wide variety of equipment available at good prices. The auction site is Public Processing LLC. Once on the site, officials suggest typing “city of Albuquerque” in the search engine to see items that are available. Public Processing handles payments for the city and payment for an awarded item must be received within five business days of the close of the auction.

It looks like a fight is brewing between UNM and Steve Alford who just left. In a letter from UNM to Alford it stated because Alford quit on March 30th and was still under his old contract, it required 30 days’ notice if he wanted to leave. That means his last day should be April 29th which is after his new contract would have kicked in. The contract calls for a million dollar buyout and UNM says it wants the money by April 29th. Alford says he quit before his new contract started — so he should only owe $150,000.

On the flip side of things, Craig Neal starts his first full day as the Lobo men’s head basketball coach. Coach Neal, known as “Noodles” was introduced yesterday making a joke about the famous cherry blazer Alford used to wear that he now will be wearing a lot.

Two big boundary changes for Albuquerque Public Schools will go into effect this morning. The first calls for all parents to show documents proving where they live every year and the other calls for changing boundaries for the overcrowded North Star Elementary School off of Ventura near Alameda in northeast Albuquerque. Students living in an area bordered by Alameda, Paseo del Norte, Ventura and Eubank will now go to double eagle elementary– about two miles east of North Star.

For the first time Taos Ski Valley will open its slopes to mountain biking. The new mountain biking terrain will open this summer. Riders will have full access to trails equipped with a variety of jumps and skills courses. Hikers will also be able to ride the lifts to enjoy the views and hotels, restaurants, and shops in the village will stay open to accommodate the summer visitors.
